The Wall Street Journal once asked me whether I had a plan to cultivate a brilliant entrepreneur. Of course, all parents hope that their kids can get enough capability, courage and luck to realize their dream. While giving encouragement is quite easy, guaranteeing due courage and opportunity for the young generation is a hard nut to crack.
Jack is my first son. As a preschool kid, he is retarded in speaking, and I had the same problem when I was that young. But we finally solved the problem through speech therapy. Jack overcame his stammer by seizing the opportunities and resources from his school and community, which was of huge advantage comparing with those of my age. Despite of his congenital disadvantage, he began to practice public speaking from grade one, and took part in many speech contests from grade five winning several prizes. What’s more, since my husband, Tim Dorsey, is a successful entrepreneur starting from scratch, Jack is deeply influenced by Fathers pioneering spirit during his growth. Tim started two businesses---the first time with his companion and the second all by himself. When Jack was very young, Tim had provided him with access to computer. When IBM first introduced PC jr, Tim immediately bought one home. Besides, I have my own business---a coffee bar. It is in my coffee bar that Jack first met Jim McKelvey before they jointly set up the mobile-payments company---Square. We all live in pioneering style of life, and Jack witnesses both success and failure in his everyday life. So, I believe it’s good for him to start his own business. I think the best thing we give Jack is exposing him to various events and occasions so as to stimulate his creativity as much as possible. Jack spent most of his early years in St. Louis, where we often took him and his two brothers to attend classes in arts museums, zoos and teenage training progra ms. It’s good for their overall growth. Since the door of this world is open to everyone with any opportunity they want. We hope our sons understand: it is better to try than never, even the outcome is a failure. The most important experience we share with them is: life is full of challenges, only by taking advantage of opportunities can you get through them.
